For those who don't want to go that far, or who might feel their skills are rusty, don't despair. One of the most popular ways of gaining a bit of extra cash is holding a garage sale.
To organise a garage sale for maximum success you need to prepare properly. You can also share a garage sale with friends who may have items they wish to get rid of.
Most garage sales are advertised in local papers, and there is also a website, www.egarage.com.au, where you can advertise more widely. The following are some tips from the site:

  • Make sure you have enough change and, if you have a dog, tie it up or put it away from the busy area.
  • Don't forget to display sale signs at the corners of your street and put up balloons to clearly identify your home as the venue.
  • Make sure all items for sale are clean and well displayed and have clothes hanging where possible, rather than in boxes.
  • Group together categories - tools, plants or clothes, for example - and have all items clearly marked with prices.

Be pratical about the price. Even though you may think an item is valuable, putting a high price on it runs the risk of not selling it. Most people go to a garage sale for bargain.
